last blog, sad day
For my last blog I decided to write about the new health care bill. This bill will affect college students directly. There are many reasons of why this bill is good for college students. Currently 67% of college students are covered by their parents' employee sponsored insurance. With this new bill going into effect, this percentage will increase significantly. This is because more parents will have health insurance from the increased population coverage. Medical needs of those college age students will be covered by their parent’s policies. Students will now be able to stay on their parents insurance until age 26, and they don’t have to be enrolled at all times. Students can work at their own pace and take time off if need be. This will come to a relief to many seniors in college who are getting ready to graduate knowing that finding a job is very tough in this economy, especially ones that provide good enough health insurance. By college students having insurance / better insurance this will also keep the college campuses more healthy.

I am about to turn in my other four page paper and my three page paper, leaving me with only my two page paper left. My four page paper is on caffeine and my three is on SAT/ACT. For my four page paper it got passed quicker than any other paper. I think this is because before I turned it in to go through endorsement groups I had my mom and roommate look it over for any errors. I figured since I don’t have much time to make it to the labs this would be the next best thing. They helped me with a lot of the local issues (grammar.) I also think that by showing other people your paper and talking about it with them if gives you new ideas and new ways of doing things. I thought I was going to do my two page paper on tanning but I am beginning to rethink that. I kind of think it would be neat to write it on some random argument that I have in my head and back it up well. But I’m not sure and I need to schedule a conference, it’s just so hard with softball and never being here. I will have big weight lifted off my shoulders though when I get these four papers turned in and off my back!!

For my PSY class we are learning about child development. There is many ways for toddlers to learn new words I think that. Joint attention is a great way for your toddler to learn new words. When your toddler picks up an object, looks, or touches and object – label it for them. For example if your toddler is staring at a pen pick it up and say “pen, this is a pen.” While labeling things for your child make sure you are looking at the object and not something else while labeling it – this confuses toddlers. Viewing television (at moderation) is also a good way to learn new words. Watching shows like Sesame Street improves child’s vocabulary. Sesame Street helps because it involves the child in language actives to learn words. At the beginning of ten months an infant will point, touch, or make noise. If a baby is pointing at a toy they want usually mothers (and other people) translate the baby’s words for them, this aids the way for learning new words. After the first birthday child learn how to begin conversations with adults. Toddler’s first conversations are about themselves, it then expands to include objects in the environment. After that the conversations have more theoretical ideas in them. Preschool children give more elaborate messages to the listeners who lack critical information.

I just got my grade back from my first paper; I must say I thought I did better than that. At least before our portfolio is due I will have time for more revision. Right now I am working on two papers at once. It is not only difficult but annoying. Because it is like twice the work and I have to switch from topic to topic. But this way if I get sick of writing on one I can go to the other. I am writing about ACT/SAT’s … they really bother me and I think that we should get rid of them! So I thought this topic would be great from a short three page paper. My other four paper I decided to make it on caffeine, I am also doing a project over caffeine so I thought writing about it would have me study the information. Also I drink pop everyday and get caffeine headaches if I don’t have it in the morning. So it is also interesting learning about what it does to my body. I think I will make my two page paper on the good effects of tanning. One struggle I have is that I have already missed 3 or 4 classes due to softball this makes it difficult to get my paper read. And also read other peoples paper. I wish I did not have to miss so much for softball. Other than that the writing has been going well.

We just finished our first paper and I now I am on to thinking of new topics for my next argument paper. One topic I wanted to look into was the new healthcare reform that was just passed. So I researched BOTH sides to see what I agreed with. The positives are as follows: It makes insurance more affordable by providing the largest middle class tax cut for health care in history. This helps 32 million Americans afford health care who do not get it today. Under the plan, 95% of Americans will be insured. It prevents insurance industry abuses and denial of care. On the opposite side: government has control of where we go to the doctor at. It will cost the country over one trillion dollars. Premiums will rise. I personally think that passing the healthcare bill is a bad idea. I will have to research it more though. I want to be able to decide where I go to the doctor at. If I get cancer or something like that I want to be able to choose the best doctor available not have one “assigned” to me.

first paper
Well I just got done writing my first augment paper. For this paper was really hard getting started on. As Facebook and the internet grows so does the information on these topics, there were many facts that could make my opinion go either way. I had to then organize that information and decided what stance I wanted to take. After all that was said and done I wrote away, that was the easy part getting my thoughts on paper, I then need to organize my paper , add a thesis and conclusion. The revision process was a long one; I revised once before I took it to the endorsement groups and then 3 times after that! Each new group and something new to say or something to add. This really helped my paper developed and “be all it could be.” I hope that I helped people out like they helped me out. The group that helped me out the most was the grammar group, I had to get it checked a couple of time. For my next paper I will be taking it to the writing lab, I think I can help me a lot on that part and developing my paragraphs better. For my next paper I also want to have more sources I had about five this last paper but the stronger you back up your argument the more it makes people think. The whole point of my paper is not to make someone switch their mind, because I am very stubborn and I know that by me reading one paper isn’t going to make me switch my mind. All I am trying to do is make people think about my argument.

I wrote my paper on Facebook and the work world. But there are also many reason of why outside of work it is dangerous. There are three major threats for social networking sites such as Facebook. One being identity theft which is the crime of stealing someone's personal, identifying information for the purpose of using that information fraudulently. This includes Social Security Numbers, credit card and banking account numbers, usernames, passwords, and patient records. The crime of identity theft is most often committed by organized crime. Secondly, Facebook adds threats to personal safety such as stalking or threatening either online or in real life. It is estimated that 1.4 million Americans are stalked each year. Thirdly, with Facebook there social risks through participating in minority groups or stigmatized groups. Facebook gives you the opportunity to add/join groups and even make them. The problem with this is that all groups are not tasteful and sometimes demeaning. Hate groups and what not can also get you fired from work or you can be considered a bully. I don’t want people to think that I am anit-Facebook. I actually have a Facebook and wouldn’t get rid of it. I am just trying to spread awareness to people and to use it safe. Facebook is a great way to connect people with each other; I guess you just have to be sure of who is on the other side of the screen. This goes for anything you do on the internet or any information you put out there about yourself, you think it may be blocked up there is always a way to get around it!

As I begin writing my first paper that is due Monday a lot of things come to my head. The first paper is usually very stressful because everyone wants to get started out on the right track. For my first argument paper I am writing about Facebook, and whether or not people should get in trouble for having it in the work world. Many argue that it is not professional while on the other side other people say it is no one business what you do outside of work. As I stared researching I have found many case studies that are very interesting. For endorsement groups I am organizational, which basically focuses on organization of the paper. I think that this will not only help me help other students but it will also help me in my paper. One side that I will need a lot of help on is grammar. I struggle with this so I feel I will need extra help, the Studio is a great place to get help. I have a couple other topics for my other papers and hope they are strong. Britney Spears, U-High education, and health insurance. I think that these argument papers will help in my further college studies. Arguments are all over and we use them in our everyday life. I am excited to get started, but can’t wait to get them all finished. I am working really hard now on my opening paragraph because I want to grab the reader’s attention.

For my child developmental class I had to think of 10 things in my head that all mothers should know. I came up with a list in my head and thought that this would also be an interesting blog. There some very interesting facts and things that I learned during the class so here they are!
1) Prenatal development is the changes that revolutionize the fertilized egg into a newborn human. This would be important for the mother to know because it takes an average of 38 weeks (that’s how long you’re usually pregnant.) Prenatal development is divided into three stages. All stages have an important development in the baby-to-be.
2) Nutrition for the baby is also important. Mothers should know about this because they are sole provider while the baby is in their stomach. Most pregnant women should increase there calories by about 10%-20%. Not only calories but mothers also need good amounts of proteins, vitamins, and minerals to have a healthy baby.
3) Stress, everybody has it. Stress is not only harmful for the mother but also the baby. Studies have shown that mothers who have greater stress and anxiety during pregnancy usually give birth to babies that weigh less than normal. Mothers should find ways to deal with stress so the baby is not at harm.
4) Umbilical cord holds the blood vessels that link the embryo to the placenta. I think that this would be important for a mother to know because a lot of people are starting to keep the umbilical cord for the baby. If they should to get sick and have to kill all the bad cells they can take it from the frozen umbilical cord and it would be a perfect match, instead of waiting around for a donor. The umbilical cord is also how the baby gets nutrients while in the mother.
5) Apgar score is used to determine the baby’s condition after he or she is born. There if five different sections they look for: breathing, heartbeat, muscle tone, presence reflexes, and skin tone. This is important because mothers will want to know the condition of their new born baby. All five scores are added together, and a score of 7 or more means the baby is in good physical condition.
6) Every newborn baby will cry I don’t care how old you are your still going to cry. Crying is very important for mothers to know because a lot freak out if their baby cries. There are different cries a baby makes and all means something different. A basic cry starts out not to loud and usually becomes louder when the baby gets hungry or tired. A mad cry is just a strong version of
a basic cry. A pain cry is more rapid bursts of loud crying followed by gasping.
7) Swaddling is a very important method used where you wrap the baby up tightly in a blanket. This sooths the baby and sometimes makes them feel like they are still in the mothers womb. This is important because it sooths the baby and will help with crying. It makes the baby feel content.
8) A cesarean section, most commonly called a C-section is when the doctors make a slit in the abdomen and remove the baby from the mother’s uterus. This is important for mothers to be to know because they might be faced with the doctor asking them or telling them about a C-section. 9) Fetal alcohol syndrome is when the mother while pregnant consumes large amounts of alcohol; they then give birth to babies with this syndrome. This is important because the babies could have abnormal heart problems and misshapen faces.
10) Postpartum depression happens after the baby is born and a feeling of irritably, low self-worth, disturbed sleep, low appetite, and laziness happens to the mother. This only happens to about 10%-15% of mothers. Mothers need to be aware of this to get help, the baby can and mother can both suffer from this.

argument papers
As we start talking about our argument papers I am starting to get nervous. The “need to know list” and “authority journal” have really helped me out. I have a couple ideas, one being writing a paper on if people should be able to be fired for having “partying” or “silly” pictures on Facebook, As I get older and into more of the work world this issue becomes more important to me. For this paper I think that one of the easy things will be is thinking of issues and things to write about, I am good with coming up with ideas and things that I believe strongly in. I have an opinion on everything, as everyone should. I am scared about proofreading and grammar in this essay, which has never been a strong focus for me. Since this is an argument paper I will need a lot of support to make my argument strong. This will require a lot of research! – I must say I’m already not looking forward to the bibliography. I know that if I find a topic that I have a strong opinion on I can and will write a good paper with a lot of support. When it comes to writing I am never a good writer if I put it off until the day that it is close to being due. With this being said I must start getting ahead start and researching and finding valid sources. This way when the time comes I can really focus on the actually writing.

Since I tan and I am guilty about it I decided to express my opinion about why I think tanning is actually good for you. A big reason why I tan is because it cheers me up and sunshine boosts levels of serotonin, the body's natural "happy hormone.” Tanning also makes me feel more energetic. Another reason why I tan is because it helps with aches in pains in the body and as people I know play softball and every day after it my body aches, tanning for 20min helps it feel relieved. It also seems that when I don’t tan I start getting pimples; the sun dries up my skin so it’s not oily and helps prevent pimples. The first tanning bed was invented in 1906 and it was used for medical reasons not just getting that warm glow. There are also studies out showing how moderate tanning helps with cancer, MS, and diabetes. Tanning beds are also shown to be better for people than direct sunlight because unlike direct sunlight, most tanning beds today have a controlled dosage of ultraviolet rays and the dosage you do get is spread out over several tanning bed sessions. Furthermore in the winter not many people get sun from being outdoors, people then lack vitamin D, which you can get from a tanning bed. During the winter month’s people are usually worried about getting sick but sunlight from the tanning beds encourages the production of white blood cells, which help to boost your immune system and fight infection. Everyone looks better with a little bit of color! As long as you tan moderately and follow the rules listed in the tanning salons, I find nothing wrong with it. Now that I listed the reason I know why I think tanning is good, I’m going to go tan!

blog #1 --
As a writer there have been many ups and downs that I have gone through. A lot of moments have shaped my writing experience. For example I remember a paper I wrote about softball my freshman year of college that I got an A on it; I worked really hard and used many recourses available. Starting out with a good grade on my first paper in college really gave me a burst of confidence. It was a moment that I was proud and felt I could do it. A moment that wasn’t so good was when I was a sophomore in college and I got a C on a paper, I felt I worked hard on it and it took me many weeks to complete. It was six pages long over the movie Borat. I had to write about how it tied into American Culture. In elementary school you are just starting to learn how to write, read, and make things fit together. As you enter middle school you start learning how to write essay and do research. Then you move into high school and things start getting graded and you have certain prompts you have to follow. For example MLA format, writing becomes less free and you have more guide lines. College papers are usually filled with a lot of research and they are graded on exactly how the teachers want. There are many different kinds of writing. My writing use to be for fun and to get my feelings out. For example, I use to keep a journal and write about things that happened in school. It’s funny to go back and look at it now, and all the little things I use to worry about or things that I thought mattered. Now my writing has turned more into writing because if I don’t I won’t pass a class. I certain things I have to write about for example, this blog or the paper I’m writing on president Obama for my American History class. There no time to “write for fun” anymore, it actually bothers me. We are told what to write and when. I feel like people do their best writing when they aren’t told to, and when they don’t have set guidelines. Like I said before I think that “out of school writing” is the best. We can say what we want and aren’t so worried about the right format and what grade we are going to get we can just write away! I don’t write the same in school and when I’m out of school. Out of school I can really state my opinion and feelings. My audience is usually the teacher, people can say it’s for other classmates but usually you are trying to catch the teacher’s eye and you could really careless about what other classmates think. This is actually pretty sad. I am usually never my own audience, only when I write in my journal which hasn’t been in ages. I am a slow writer if I don’t have much to write about. But if you get my fired up or angry about something I type so fast and won’t slow down till I get it all out on paper. I like to listen to music (country) when I write and I do my best writing in the library or lying on my bed. I like the library because I focus and get to work, and my bed is just homely and comfortable. Throughout my writing I will pick up my phone a lot though to see texts or check the time. I try to re-read and take my time. I must use word processing; I am I horrible speller and would rather type then write. This is all for this Wednesday, I’ll have more to come! – Goal for the next few weeks: generate my own ideas for papers, don’t have the teacher help me get started, get started on my own, in addition to think outside of the box for writing assignments.
